Product description
A Greenhouse PVC NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) Hydroponic Channel is a core component of a modern hydroponic growing system, designed to support plant growth in a controlled, soilless environment. These channels are essentially the elongated gutters or troughs that hold the plants and allow a shallow stream of nutrient-rich water to flow past the roots.
Primary Material and Construction:
These channels are constructed from UV-resistant PVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride). This material is chosen for its durability, resistance to degradation from sunlight, light weight, and inert nature, meaning it won't leach harmful chemicals into the nutrient solution. The channels feature a smooth interior to facilitate a consistent, unimpeded flow of water.
Key Features and Design:
Design: They are long, square or rectangular troughs. Each channel is equipped with two end caps: one closed cap at the higher end and one with an outlet port at the lower end to drain the nutrient solution back to the central reservoir.
Lid System: A separate, snap-on lid typically covers the channel. This lid has pre-cut holes at specific intervals to hold net cups, which contain the plants and their growing medium (like rockwool or clay pebbles). The lid is crucial for blocking light, which prevents algae growth within the channel.
Sizing: Common sizes range from 3 inches by 3 inches to 6 inches by 2.5 inches (approximately 75mm x 75mm to 150mm x 65mm). Standard lengths are 2 to 6 meters (6.5 to 20 feet). The size selected depends on the type of crop; larger plants with bigger root systems require wider channels.
Slope: A critical aspect of the NFT technique is the gentle slope of the channel, typically between 1:30 and 1:100. This minimal gradient is essential for creating a very shallow "film" of nutrient solution, ensuring roots receive ample oxygen while absorbing water and nutrients.
Function within the NFT System:
The channels are mounted on support structures (benches or A-frames) in the greenhouse. A water pump sends nutrient solution from a reservoir to the high end of each channel via a distribution manifold. The solution then flows gently down the length of the channel, bathing the bare roots, before draining out the lower end and returning to the reservoir to be recirculated. This creates a closed-loop, highly water-efficient system.
Advantages:
The main advantages of using PVC for these channels include their cost-effectiveness, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation and cleaning. Their light weight makes them easy to handle and support. The white color of many PVC channels helps reflect light and keep the root zone temperature cooler.
Considerations:
It is imperative that the PVC is rated for UV resistance to prevent brittleness and cracking over time. Proper support structure is also vital to maintain the precise, consistent slope required for optimal system performance.
